Is usually not typical for a car manufacturer to restart the production of one of its cars more exclusive and iconic. And less if we are talking about Porsche, a company that measures with zeal the production of special cars, trying at the same time to avoid speculation with this type of car. Then I could shock us to the decision of Porsche, the decision to build four additional units of the 911 GT2 RS, whose production ceased months ago. The reason of occurrence of four cars has to do with an unfortunate shipwreck of a boat near the coast of France.
The wreck was suffered by a boat called Great America, belonging to the owner’s Italian Grimaldi Lines. This ship ro-ro ship – a boat devoted fundamentally to the transport of cars – suffered a serious fire on board, 140 nautical miles from the French coast. In its interior there were approximately 2,000 cars, as well as tons and tons of chemical products: 10 tons of hydrochloric acid and 70 tonnes of sulphuric acid. The 12 of march is declared a fire on board and the ship had to be abandoned by the crew. The ship rests now in the bottom sea… to nearly five kilometres deep.
The destination of this ship was Brazil, and in its interior there were cars of different manufacturers, including Audi Q7, Audi RS4 Avant and Audi RS5 – as he confirmed Audi Brazil – and four of the last units of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. These cars had been manufactured the previous month, and were responsible for some of the best brazilian customers of Porsche. In a letter published by Carscoops, Porsche Brazil communicates to your customers the unfortunate maritime incident, stressing that the production of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS has already ended.
However, due to how important are these clients, in a gesture of good faith, Porsche will manufacture four additional units of the 911 GT2 RS. Four units delivered to customers in June and that will have the same specifications and equipment originally ordered. A movement that honors the brand, which could have simply refunded the amount paid to its customers along with a letter of apology. Thus, the production final of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS will be 504 units, four more than initially planned, in replacement of the destroyed on the high seas.
The story has a happy ending in the end. Customers will continue to receive their cars, which will have an extra of curiosity and a special story, possibly something that will make its value remain high in the future – more than a GT2 RS without so much “history”.
