In-Competition: All you need to know the Rally of Portugal to 2019

23 min read

The World Rally championship 2019 arrives at its equator with a Rally of Portugal that, by 2018, turned upside down the fight for the titles, allowing Thierry Neuville would be put in a battle which was later also joined Ott Tanak. A year later, the three return to be protagonists, with the driver of Hyundai Motorsport recovered physically from his accident in Chile, with a Tanak in progression after winning his second rally of the year, and with Ogier doing a resistance worthy of mention-based podiums despite the fact that the C3 WRC is far from the level of performance of the Toyota Yaris WRC. The three have been dealt all the victories on the year so far. What the seventh will be a winner different?

In total, 18 sections will be in the program with a total distance of 1.433,15 km, of which 306,97 will be timed. Much eye the Friday, without the assistance of middle and with only 15 minutes to perform the tire change. Any error during the first loop may pass bill in a day with just 95 kilometres competitive in a few stretches that practically have not been used since 2001, in the region of Arganil. It will be the Saturday when we return to a path much more traditional and determinant with its 160 km against the clock, while leaving the special more to the north.

Perhaps the greatest innovations in the itinerary we found in relation to the special. The circuit of Lousada not open the rally as it used to be usual on Thursday, but closed the day Friday. The Saturday they were scheduled two passes through the stretch show Gaia Street Stage, which began in the spring of Gaia and ended at the town Hall, something that finally did not take place after that due to financial issues it has been decided to cancel and leave the second stage in just six-special. Riders will have 28 tyres for the weekend, among which you will choose 28 Michelin LTX Force M6 and 16 hard compound H4 in a test in which expect very high temperatures, above 30ºC.

Sébastien Ogier, Thierry Neuville and Ott Tanak have succeeded in each of two victories of the season so far.

For Sunday, the same day that we had already in 2018, with five sections that barely add up to 50 kilometers away, and with the iconic Salto da Pedra Sentada grabbing the attention of all. Obviously the stretch of Fafe will be in charge of making the Power Stage. The early forecasts suggest dry weather, with very high temperatures and no rain in the days previous, so everything seems to point to that the first few passes will clean up a lot, making the World championship leader, Sébastien Ogier again have problems, in this case augmented by the behavior bit accurate Citroen C3 WRC in conditions of little grip. The structure, expected developments in the coming months, although it is true that the development of the aerodynamic kit has been delayed.

Between the World Rally Cars, the big news is that Hyundai Motorsport has decided to relocate its pilots. Out Andreas Mikkelsen and enters Sébastien Loeb, leaving in doubt what will happen with the rest of the program of the alsatian and Daniel Elena. With four appointments have already been completed, the nine times Champions of the World Rally championship were scheduled to play originally six, repeating on several occasions Loeb that they have no intention of extending them. If you have already made it clear that it will not be in Finland, the sacrificed may be Germany for Seb try to defend his victory in Spain last year.

Dani Sordo returns to the steering wheel of the Hyundai i20 WRC after its presence in Argentina, and a solid result can give wings to the spaniard for the rest of the season. Even so, the main problem for Andrea Adamo is still in the of finding someone to occupy the third seat in Finland. The main novelty in the highest category is that Gus Greensmith will be for the first time at the wheel of the Ford Fiesta WRC.

Despite the departure of last year, Portugal is ‘territory Ogier’. The French got here five victories and in addition premiered his locker in the World in 2008.

While here they are not called the pilots of the Junior, the 208 Rally Cup Iberian allow that the inscriptions do not fall too much. In total, there are 61 enrolled, the lowest number since 2012, although with the guarantee of having up to 32 units of the category R5. Without going any further, it will be the debut of the Skoda Fabia R5, while the Ford Fiesta R5 it will have to wait to be scheduled to view the article in the Ypres Rally, along with other outstanding names such as Thierry Neuville and Craig Breen who was recently confirmed with a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 that will compete against the true owner of the cited belgian, Freddy Loix. In Portugal, Citroën will also have a new geometry of the rear end for the C3, R5, in the hopes that in the next few months come also the rest of improvements, among them, changes in the engine.

In terms of the big favorites, we arrived to the territory Sébastien Ogier. Despite its neglect in the past year, the frenchman has been able to win up to five times the test side with four different cars. It is also true that in the past four years has had to share out the victories with Kris Meeke, Jari-Matti Latvala and Thierry Neuville, winner in 2018, in a result that gave wings to the pilot of Hyundai in their hopes of winning the drivers title thanks to the zero of the Gap. Sébastien Loeb won the appointment on two occasions when it’s still raging in the Algarve.
